Background

Dreamiyata Entertainment, founded by actor-producer couple Ravie Dubey and Sargun Mehta, conceived Udaariyaan as a Punjab-rooted family drama exploring themes of aspiration, migration, and the personal cost of unchecked ambition. The title, meaning "flights" or "soaring" in Punjabi, refers to the dreams of its central characters who seek upward mobility, often through emigration to Canada — a recurring social motif in contemporary Punjabi life.

Plot

The early storyline centres on three principal characters from the town of Moga: Tejo Sandhu, a calm and educated elder sister who teaches at a local school; Jasmine Sandhu, the younger sister fixated on settling abroad; and Fateh Singh Virk, an athlete and gym instructor with his own ambitions of moving to Canada. The narrative explores betrayal, sisterhood, and redemption when Fateh, initially in a relationship with Jasmine, ends up married to Tejo through a chain of events.

Subsequent narrative phases — known among viewers as generational leaps — introduced new arcs and characters, shifting the focus to the next generation while retaining the show's Punjab–Canada cultural backdrop.

Cast

The show featured a rotating ensemble across its run. Principal performers in the early seasons included:

  • Priyanka Choudhary as Tejo Sandhu
  • Isha Malviya as Jasmine Sandhu
  • Ankit Gupta as Fateh Singh Virk

Later phases introduced new lead pairings, with actors including Hitesh Bharadwaj, Twinkle Arora, Sonakshi Batra, and Alisha Parveen taking on prominent roles as the storyline progressed.

Production

Filming was carried out largely on purpose-built sets and on location to capture the rural and small-town Punjabi milieu. The series uses Punjabi attire, music, festivals, and language inflections within its Hindi dialogue to anchor its regional identity. The show's title track and several background pieces draw from Punjabi folk and popular music idioms.

Reception and significance

Udaariyaan attracted a substantial viewership soon after its debut, becoming one of the higher-rated dramas on Colors TV during its initial run as per industry tracker BARC India weekly charts. The show is often cited for bringing Punjab-centred storytelling to a mainstream Hindi general entertainment channel, and for engaging with socially relevant themes such as the obsession with foreign settlement, dowry, domestic abuse, and the immigration aspirations common in Punjab's youth.

The series also drew attention for the popularity of its lead pairing in its first phase and for the public discussions around generational leaps, a storytelling device frequently used in Indian television to refresh ongoing serials.

Soundtrack

The title song and background score blend Punjabi folk influences with contemporary Hindi television music. Tracks tied to romantic and emotional sequences in the early arcs gained popularity on streaming platforms and short-video apps.
