Background
The institution traces its origins to a veterinary teaching and cattle research establishment at Mathura, a city historically associated with cattle rearing and pastoral traditions in the Braj region. Over the decades, the institute developed into a full-fledged college of veterinary science before being upgraded to the status of a state veterinary university by the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
The university operates as a specialised institution under the state government, with its academic and research mandate covering veterinary medicine, surgery, public health, animal genetics and breeding, livestock production and management, and allied agricultural sciences.
Academics and research
DUVASU offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in veterinary and animal sciences. Its constituent college conducts the Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) programme, along with master's and doctoral degrees in clinical, preclinical and basic veterinary disciplines.
The university also functions as a cattle research institute, with research farms and clinical units that support work in indigenous cattle breeds, dairy improvement and animal disease investigation. Extension activities include veterinary clinics, animal health camps and outreach to livestock farmers across the Braj region and adjoining districts of western Uttar Pradesh.
Significance
DUVASU is one of the few standalone state veterinary universities in India and the principal institution for veterinary higher education in Uttar Pradesh. Its location in Mathura links its academic mission to a region long known for dairy farming and bovine husbandry, giving it a distinctive role in the conservation and improvement of indigenous cattle breeds.
