Overview

The Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) is a national-level entrance examination conducted annually by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay). It is designed to assess the aptitude and skills of candidates seeking admission to undergraduate design programmes in India, with a primary focus on the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) degree offered at participating institutes.

Role in admissions

UCEED serves as the qualifying examination for admission to the B.Des programmes at participating institutes. Candidates who clear the examination are considered for admission to the design programmes at IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, IIT Hyderabad, and IIITDM Jabalpur. The examination evaluates a range of competencies relevant to design education, including visualisation, observation, analytical reasoning, environmental and social awareness, design thinking, and problem solving.

Background

The examination was instituted to provide a common platform for candidates aspiring to pursue formal education in design at the undergraduate level in premier Indian institutions. By centralising the admission process under IIT Bombay, UCEED standardises the assessment of design aptitude across multiple participating institutes, allowing students a unified route to apply for B.Des programmes offered by the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM) at Jabalpur.
