Location and setting
The hotel stands at Nariman Point, a reclaimed promontory at the southern tip of Marine Drive that developed from the 1970s onward as Mumbai's principal commercial district. It overlooks Back Bay and the Arabian Sea, and is in close proximity to landmarks such as the National Centre for the Performing Arts, the Air India Building, and Mantralaya, the seat of the Government of Maharashtra. The Bombay High Court, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, and the Gateway of India are within the broader South Mumbai area accessible from the hotel.
Background
The property was originally launched as the Oberoi Towers, the taller component of the twin-tower Oberoi complex. For a period after its opening, it was among the tallest hotel buildings in Asia. Following a rebranding within The Oberoi Group, the Towers wing was repositioned under the Trident banner, while the lower tower retained the flagship Oberoi name. The Trident brand is used by EIH Limited for its five-star business and leisure hotels across India, distinguishing them from the more boutique-oriented Oberoi-branded properties.
2008 Mumbai attacks
The Trident–Oberoi complex was one of the principal sites attacked during the coordinated terrorist assault on Mumbai that began on the night of 26 November 2008. Gunmen of the Lashkar-e-Taiba entered the hotel and held guests hostage; security operations by the Maharashtra Police, the Marine Commandos and the National Security Guard concluded on 28 November 2008. The attack caused significant loss of life among guests, staff and security personnel, and led to extensive damage to the property. The hotel was subsequently restored and reopened to guests.
Facilities
As a full-service luxury hotel, Trident Nariman Point offers guest rooms and suites with sea or city views, multiple restaurants and bars, banquet and conference facilities, a swimming pool, fitness centre and spa. Its meeting facilities are widely used by corporates headquartered in the Nariman Point and Fort business districts.
Significance
The hotel is considered one of the established landmarks on the Mumbai skyline along Marine Drive. Its location in the heart of Nariman Point has historically made it a venue for business conferences, diplomatic visits and cultural events in the city. It is also cited in studies of Indian hospitality as an example of the dual-brand strategy adopted by The Oberoi Group through its Oberoi and Trident lines.
