Operating originally as Titagarh Wagons, it grew through organic expansion and acquisitions to become one of India's principal private wagon builders.
In 2010, Titagarh acquired the Indian operations of Cimmco, another long-established wagon manufacturer, broadening its production base. The company subsequently invested in Italian rolling stock manufacturer Firema Trasporti, gaining access to passenger coach and metro design capabilities in Europe.
In 2022, the company was renamed Titagarh Rail Systems Limited to reflect its diversification beyond freight wagons into passenger and metro rolling stock.
