Overview
Tiruppur district lies in the inland Kongu region of Tamil Nadu, between the districts of Coimbatore to the west, Erode to the north and east, Karur and Dindigul to the southeast, and Udumalpet's neighbouring tracts touching Kerala in the south-west. The Noyyal and Amaravathi rivers traverse parts of the district, and the southern tracts include the foothills of the Anaimalai range.
Formation
The district was constituted on 22 February 2009 by bifurcating areas from the erstwhile Coimbatore district and Erode district. The reorganisation was intended to provide focused administration to the rapidly industrialising Tiruppur urban region and the surrounding agricultural taluks.
Administration
The district is administered by a District Collector and is divided into revenue divisions and taluks. Major taluks include Tiruppur (North and South), Avinashi, Palladam, Dharapuram, Kangeyam, Udumalaipettai (Udumalpet), Madathukulam and Uthukuli. Local self-government is organised through municipal corporations, municipalities, town panchayats and village panchayats grouped under panchayat unions.

Economy
Tiruppur is regarded as the knitwear capital of India and contributes a significant share of the country's cotton knitwear exports. The city and its surrounding towns host an integrated cluster of spinning mills, knitting units, dyeing and processing houses, printing units, embroidery shops, and garment manufacturers and exporters. Industry bodies such as the Tiruppur Exporters' Association (TEA) represent the cluster.
Outside the garment belt, the district economy includes agriculture (cotton, coconut, maize, groundnut and millets), dairying, and trade. Kangeyam is historically associated with the Kangayam breed of draught cattle. Dharapuram and Udumalpet are important agricultural and trading centres.
Transport
The district is well connected by road and rail. National Highway 544 (the Salem–Kochi corridor) and other state highways pass through Tiruppur, Avinashi and Palladam. The Tiruppur railway station lies on the Chennai–Coimbatore main line of Southern Railway. The nearest major airport is Coimbatore International Airport.
Culture and demography
Tamil is the principal language of the district. Owing to its industrial base, Tiruppur city has attracted a substantial migrant workforce from other parts of Tamil Nadu and from northern and eastern Indian states. The district forms part of the cultural region of Kongu Nadu, with traditions reflected in temples, festivals and cuisine characteristic of western Tamil Nadu.
