Background and early life
Tilak Varma was born and raised in Hyderabad. He began training in cricket at a young age under coach Salam Bayash at the Lego Cricket Academy in the city. His family background has been described as modest, and his coach is widely credited with supporting his development through his formative years.
He progressed through Hyderabad's junior age-group ranks, representing the state in under-16, under-19 and under-23 cricket before breaking into the senior side.
Domestic career
Tilak made his first-class debut for Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy and subsequently appeared in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (List A) and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (Twenty20) competitions. He was also part of the India under-19 squad that played in the lead-up to the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, captaining and contributing as a senior batter in age-group fixtures.
India A and selection pathway
Strong performances in domestic limited-overs cricket led to his selection for India A teams in tours and unofficial Tests, where he was used primarily as a middle-order batter.
Indian Premier League
Tilak Varma was bought by the Mumbai Indians at the IPL 2022 player auction. He made an immediate impression in his debut season with consistent middle-order scores and quickly established himself as a regular in the franchise's playing XI. He has since been retained by Mumbai Indians across subsequent seasons and is viewed as a long-term batting option for the franchise.
International career
Tilak made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut for India during the tour of the West Indies in 2023, and his One Day International (ODI) debut on the same tour. He has since been a regular feature in India's T20I middle order, playing in bilateral series at home and abroad.
He is known for adapting to varied match situations, particularly in chases, and for using his left-handed stance to counter spin and disrupt right-arm pace bowlers' lines.
Playing style
Tilak is primarily a middle-order accumulator who can shift gears in the shorter formats. His strengths include strong wrist-work through the leg side, the ability to play spin late, and clean hitting down the ground. He bowls occasional right-arm off-spin in limited-overs cricket.
Significance
Tilak Varma's rise is often cited as part of a broader trend of young Indian batters graduating quickly from age-group cricket and the IPL into the national side. Within Hyderabad cricket, he is considered one of the most notable batting products since the generation that included Ambati Rayudu and Mohammad Azharuddin's later proteges, and his progression has drawn attention to grassroots academy coaching in the city.
