The premise blends cross-border intelligence operations with a love story between agents of rival nations, a template that the series has retained across its sequels.
Films
Ek Tha Tiger (2012)
Directed by Kabir Khan, Ek Tha Tiger was released on 15 August 2012, coinciding with India's Independence Day. The film introduces Tiger, a senior RAW field agent, who is sent to Dublin to surveil an Indian-origin scientist suspected of sharing missile technology with Pakistan. He encounters Zoya, the scientist's caretaker, who is later revealed to be an ISI operative. The film was a commercial success and established the central pairing of the franchise.
Tiger Zinda Hai (2017)
Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, Tiger Zinda Hai released on 22 December 2017. The plot is loosely inspired by the 2014 abduction of Indian and Pakistani nurses by Islamic State militants in Tikrit, Iraq. Tiger leads a joint RAW–ISI mission to rescue the hostages from the fictional town of Ikrit. The film featured action set pieces in Abu Dhabi, Greece and Austria, and was among the highest-grossing Hindi films of its year.
Tiger 3 (2023)
Directed by Maneesh Sharma, Tiger 3 released on 12 November 2023, timed to the Diwali weekend. The film centres on a rogue former ISI operative, played by Emraan Hashmi, whose plot frames Tiger as a traitor and threatens to destabilise relations between India and Pakistan. Tiger 3 features a cameo by Shah Rukh Khan as Pathaan, and Salman Khan in turn appeared as Tiger in Pathaan (2023), formally crossing the two strands of the YRF Spy Universe.
YRF Spy Universe
The Tiger films are part of the YRF Spy Universe, a shared cinematic universe of Hindi spy thrillers produced by Yash Raj Films. Other entries include War (2019), starring Hrithik Roshan, Pathaan (2023), and War 2 (2025). Crossover cameos and shared agency references—particularly involving RAW—link the films into a continuous narrative world.

Significance
The Tiger franchise is significant in contemporary Hindi cinema for popularising the big-budget Indian spy thriller, anchoring Salman Khan's holiday-release strategy at Eid and Diwali, and serving as a foundational pillar of the YRF Spy Universe. The series has been noted for its depiction of cooperation between Indian and Pakistani agents, a relatively unusual framing in mainstream Hindi cinema.
