The series is notable for portraying its Pakistani characters with sympathy and for treating cooperation between R&AW and the ISI as a recurring narrative element. Alongside War (2019), Pathaan (2023) and other YRF spy titles, the Tiger films anchor the studio's interconnected espionage universe.
Films
Ek Tha Tiger (2012)
Directed by Kabir Khan, Ek Tha Tiger introduces Tiger, a R&AW agent sent to Dublin to monitor an Indian-origin scientist suspected of sharing missile research with Pakistan. He falls in love with the scientist's caretaker, Zoya, who is later revealed to be an ISI agent. The film was shot in locations including Dublin, Istanbul and Havana. It was a major commercial success and established the franchise template of romance entwined with espionage.
Tiger Zinda Hai (2017)
Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, Tiger Zinda Hai is loosely inspired by the 2014 abduction of Indian and Pakistani nurses in Tikrit, Iraq, by militants of the Islamic State. After years in hiding, Tiger and Zoya are brought back to lead a joint R&AW–ISI operation to rescue the hostages. The film was shot in Austria, Greece, Morocco and Abu Dhabi, and was among the highest-grossing Hindi films of its year.
Tiger 3 (2023)
Directed by Maneesh Sharma, Tiger 3 sees the protagonists framed as traitors and forced to clear their names while preventing a former ISI operative, played by Emraan Hashmi, from triggering a coup in Pakistan. The film was released around Diwali 2023 and continued the YRF Spy Universe through a cameo by Shah Rukh Khan as Pathaan.
