Geography

Thoubal district is situated in the south-eastern part of the Imphal Valley. It is bounded by Imphal East district to the north, Kakching district to the south, and hill districts to the east and west following successive administrative reorganisations. The terrain is largely flat alluvial plain, drained by the Thoubal river, the Iril and the Imphal river, which support extensive paddy cultivation. Wetlands and seasonal lakes are a notable feature of the district landscape.

Administration

The district is administered by a Deputy Commissioner and is divided into several subdivisions and tehsils, with Thoubal town serving as the administrative headquarters. Other important towns in the district include Lilong and Yairipok. The district sends representatives to the Manipur Legislative Assembly from constituencies such as Thoubal, Wangkhem, Heirok, Wangjing Tentha, Khangabok, Wabagai and Lilong.

Reorganisation

In 2016, the Government of Manipur created several new districts by bifurcating existing ones. As part of this exercise, Kakching was carved out of Thoubal district as a separate administrative unit, reducing Thoubal's geographical extent.

Demographics

The population of Thoubal district is overwhelmingly Meitei, with significant Meitei Pangal (Manipuri Muslim) communities concentrated in and around Lilong, which is one of the principal centres of Muslim population in Manipur. Hinduism (largely Vaishnavite) and Islam are the major religions, alongside the indigenous Sanamahi tradition. Manipuri (Meitei) is the dominant language; the script in everyday use is Bengali script, with growing use of Meitei Mayek.

Economy

Agriculture is the mainstay of the district economy, with paddy as the principal crop. Fisheries, vegetable cultivation and small-scale handloom and handicraft production also contribute significantly. Thoubal is well known for handloom weaving, particularly of traditional Meitei textiles, with Wangkhem, Khangabok and surrounding villages being weaving centres. The Thoubal Multipurpose Project, an irrigation and hydroelectric scheme on the Thoubal river, has been a major infrastructure initiative associated with the district.

Culture and significance

Thoubal district has historical significance in the cultural life of Manipur. It is associated with classical Manipuri performing traditions, including Ras Lila and Lai Haraoba festivals held in numerous villages. The district has produced notable figures in Manipuri literature, sport and politics. It is also remembered in modern political history as the home district of several Chief Ministers and senior political leaders of Manipur.

Transport

National Highway 102 (formerly NH-39 alignment connecting Imphal with Moreh on the Myanmar border) passes through the district, making Thoubal a key transit area on the route to the India–Myanmar border trade town of Moreh. Road transport is the dominant mode; the nearest airport and major rail connectivity are at Imphal.
