Production

The show was directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, known for independent Hindi films such as Hyderabad Blues, Iqbal and Dor. It was produced by Juggernaut Productions for ALTBalaji, the subscription video-on-demand service launched by Balaji Telefilms in April 2017. The Test Case formed part of the platform's launch slate of original content aimed at urban Indian audiences.

The lead actor Nimrat Kaur, previously known for The Lunchbox (2013) and the American series Homeland, underwent physical training to portray a combat-stream officer. Portions of the series depict drills, weapons handling and field exercises modelled on military academy routines.

Themes and reception

Critical commentary highlighted the show's engagement with the real-world policy debate on women in combat roles in the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. While women had served in support arms such as medical, education, legal and engineering streams for decades, induction into combat arms remained restricted at the time of the show's release. The series dramatised hostility, harassment and bureaucratic obstruction faced by a fictional pioneer, alongside questions of standards, infrastructure and unit cohesion frequently cited in the policy discussion.

Reviewers credited Nimrat Kaur's performance and the seriousness of the subject, while some commentary noted the use of melodramatic conventions typical of Indian television drama.

Context within Indian streaming

At the time of release, the Indian over-the-top (OTT) market was in an early growth phase, with platforms such as Hotstar, Netflix India, Amazon Prime Video and ALTBalaji competing for original Hindi content. The Test Case is often cited among the early titles that helped establish women-led, issue-driven drama as a viable genre on Indian streaming services, alongside other contemporaneous releases.
