The Cecil is a historic hotel located in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India. Set in the former summer capital of British India, it is among the older heritage hotels of the town and has long been associated with Shimla's colonial-era hospitality tradition. Background

Shimla served as the summer capital of British India from the mid-19th century until 1947, drawing officials, military officers and visitors who required substantial accommodation. A number of large hotels were established along and near the Mall to serve this seasonal demand, and The Cecil emerged as one of the prominent addresses in this network.

The hotel's association with the Oberoi family dates to the early career of Mohan Singh Oberoi, the founder of what became The Oberoi Group, whose entry into the hospitality business is closely linked to Shimla's leading hotels of the period.

The hotel today

The present-day Cecil operates as a luxury hotel under the Oberoi banner, retaining a colonial architectural character while offering modern facilities. It is positioned on the western side of Shimla, with views of the surrounding Himalayan ridges, and forms part of the town's heritage tourism circuit alongside other landmark buildings of the colonial era.

Significance

As a surviving heritage hotel from Shimla's colonial period, The Cecil is significant both for its architectural and historical character and for its place in the early history of Indian luxury hospitality. It contributes to Shimla's identity as a hill station with a continuous tradition of organised tourism going back to the 19th century.
