The Sonipat district, in which the village is situated, is bordered by Panipat district to the north, Jind and Rohtak districts to the west, Jhajjar district to the south-west, and the Yamuna river along its eastern edge, which also forms the boundary with Uttar Pradesh.
Administration
As a village in Haryana, Thana Khurd falls under the three-tier panchayati raj framework, with a gram panchayat as the elected local body. Revenue administration is handled through the tehsil and district offices of Sonipat, while law and order is overseen by the Haryana Police through the local police station jurisdiction.
Etymology
In Indian village nomenclature, the suffix Khurd (from Persian, meaning "smaller") is commonly used to distinguish a smaller settlement from a larger one bearing the same name, which is typically suffixed Kalan ("larger"). This naming convention is widespread across northern India, especially in Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh.
Connectivity
Sonipat district is served by National Highway 44 (the former NH 1, part of the north–south corridor connecting Delhi with Punjab) and by the Delhi–Ambala railway line of the Northern Railway. Sonipat city is the principal urban centre and transport hub for villages in the district, including Thana Khurd.
