Overview

The Telugu Academy was originally constituted in the undivided state of Andhra Pradesh as a state-supported institution to develop teaching and learning resources in the Telugu medium, particularly for higher education. Its work covered the preparation of textbooks across disciplines, the coining and standardisation of technical and scientific terminology in Telugu, and the publication of dictionaries, encyclopaedic material, and works of literary and cultural value.

Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014 and the formation of the state of Telangana, the institutional landscape of Telugu language promotion was reorganised, with bodies operating in both successor states to continue similar functions for their respective jurisdictions.

Background

Initiatives to promote Telugu as a medium of instruction at the college and university level grew steadily after the formation of Andhra Pradesh in 1956 on a linguistic basis. The need for standardised, affordable academic material in Telugu, especially in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, led to the creation of a dedicated state academy.
