Background
Telenor's entry into the Indian market began through a joint venture with the Indian real-estate company Unitech Group. Telenor acquired a majority stake in Unitech Wireless, and the joint venture launched mobile services in India under the brand Uninor in 2009, after Unitech Wireless was awarded 2G spectrum in multiple circles in 2008.
Operations were affected by the Supreme Court of India's judgement in February 2012, which cancelled 122 telecom licences issued in 2008 in connection with the 2G spectrum case. Several of the cancelled licences belonged to Unitech Wireless. Following this, Telenor restructured its Indian business and bid afresh for spectrum through a new vehicle, Telewings Communications, which won spectrum in the November 2012 auctions in select circles.
Rebranding and operations
The company was rebranded as Telenor in India in 2015, replacing the Uninor identity. Telenor India offered voice and data services on the GSM standard and operated in six telecom circles: Andhra Pradesh, Bihar & Jharkhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra & Goa, Uttar Pradesh (East), and Uttar Pradesh (West). The brand positioned itself as a value-for-money operator, particularly in semi-urban and rural markets.

Acquisition by Bharti Airtel
In February 2017, Bharti Airtel announced an agreement to acquire Telenor (India) Communications. The transaction transferred Telenor India's customers, spectrum holdings in the 1800 MHz band, and operations in the seven circles to Airtel. The deal received approvals from the Competition Commission of India, the National Company Law Tribunal and the Department of Telecommunications, and the merger was completed in May 2018. With this, Telenor exited the Indian market as part of the broader consolidation that followed the entry of Reliance Jio.
Significance
Telenor India's history is closely associated with two major themes in Indian telecom: the regulatory fallout from the 2G spectrum allocation controversy, and the wave of consolidation in the mid-2010s. Its exit, alongside those of other smaller operators, reduced the Indian mobile market to a small number of large players.
