Overview
Teerthanker Mahaveer University is a multidisciplinary institution offering undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes across fields such as medicine, dentistry, engineering, management, law, pharmacy, nursing, computing, agriculture, education, journalism, fine arts and the basic sciences. The university operates a single integrated campus in Moradabad that houses its constituent colleges, hospital and academic facilities.
Background
The university was set up by the Teerthanker Mahaveer Charitable Trust, which had earlier been associated with running professional colleges in the Moradabad region. The institution draws its inspiration from Jain ethical and educational values, while functioning as a secular academic body open to students from all communities.
Moradabad, popularly known as the "Brass City" of India, is one of the principal urban centres of western Uttar Pradesh, situated on the Ramganga river along the Delhi–Lucknow rail and road corridor. The city's location has shaped TMU's role as a regional centre for higher and professional education catering to students from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and adjoining states.
Academic structure
The university is organised into faculties and constituent colleges, including units devoted to:
- Medical sciences and a teaching hospital
- Dental sciences
- Engineering and computing
- Management studies
- Law and legal studies
- Pharmacy
- Nursing and paramedical sciences
- Agricultural sciences
- Education and teacher training
- Journalism, mass communication and fine arts
The medical college operates an attached multi-speciality teaching hospital, which also serves as a referral facility for the surrounding districts.
Campus
The university's campus is located on the Delhi Road in Moradabad and is residential in character, with hostels, sports facilities, libraries, laboratories and academic blocks for the various colleges. The teaching hospital, dental hospital and research centres are co-located on the same campus.
Significance
As one of the larger private universities in western Uttar Pradesh, TMU contributes to the region's higher education capacity, particularly in professional disciplines such as medicine, dentistry and engineering, where seats in government institutions are limited. It is part of a broader expansion of state private universities in Uttar Pradesh enabled by state legislation governing private higher education.
