Technocity, Thiruvananthapuram

Overview

Technocity is an information technology park being developed at Pallippuram on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the Indian state of Kerala. Promoted as the fourth IT campus of Technopark Thiruvananthapuram, it is intended as a large, integrated township-style facility for technology, research and knowledge-based industries.

Background

Technopark Thiruvananthapuram, established in 1990, was India's first technology park and grew through successive phases at Kazhakkoottam. As demand for built-up space and serviced land outgrew the original campus, the Government of Kerala identified land further north, near Pallippuram, for a much larger expansion. This expansion area, planned as a self-contained technology township, was branded Technocity.

Location and connectivity

The site lies along the National Highway corridor north of Kazhakkoottam, where the existing Technopark phases are located. It is close to the Thiruvananthapuram–Kollam highway axis and is served by suburban road and rail connectivity, with Thiruvananthapuram International Airport and the city centre to the south.

Development

Technocity is conceived as an integrated campus combining IT office space with residential, commercial, educational and recreational components, in line with the township model adopted by several Indian technology parks. Land acquisition for the project was carried out in phases by the state government, and infrastructure works including internal roads and utilities have been progressively taken up. Built-up IT space within Technocity is developed both directly by Technopark and through private developers on allotted plots.

Significance

As an extension of Technopark, Technocity is significant to Kerala's IT policy because it substantially increases the developable area available for technology firms in the Thiruvananthapuram region. It complements the older Technopark phases at Kazhakkoottam and supports the state's strategy of clustering IT and knowledge-economy activity around the capital, alongside similar campuses in Kochi and Kozhikode.
