Overview
TaxiForSure was an Indian online cab aggregator and taxi booking service that operated across several cities in India. Founded in Bengaluru, the company offered on-demand transportation by linking customers with affiliated taxi operators through a mobile application, website, and call centre. Background
TaxiForSure was launched with the aim of organising India's fragmented taxi market, where most operators were small fleet owners with limited technology infrastructure. The platform aggregated cabs from independent taxi operators and provided them with technology, branding, and a centralised booking channel, while allowing customers to book point-to-point rides at metered or fixed fares.
The founders, Aprameya Radhakrishna and Raghunandan G., were graduates of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A). The company was operated under the corporate entity Serendipity Infolabs Pvt. Ltd.
History
Founding and growth
The service was launched in Bengaluru in 2011, initially focusing on the city's airport and intra-city travel before expanding to other major Indian metros including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chandigarh and Jaipur. The company raised multiple rounds of venture capital funding from investors including Accel Partners, Helion Venture Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners and Blume Ventures.
Acquisition by Ola
In March 2015, ANI Technologies, which operates the Ola Cabs platform, announced the acquisition of TaxiForSure. The transaction was widely reported to be one of the largest consolidations in the Indian internet industry at the time and reflected intensifying competition in the ride-hailing segment, particularly with the entry of Uber into India.
Following the acquisition, TaxiForSure continued to operate as a separate brand for some time before Ola wound down the standalone application and integrated its operations into the Ola platform.
Operations
TaxiForSure functioned as an aggregator rather than a fleet owner. Drivers and small taxi operators registered with the platform retained ownership of their vehicles, while TaxiForSure provided customer acquisition, dispatch technology, payment processing and a service quality framework. Bookings could be made via the smartphone application, the website, or a telephone call centre, with payment options including cash and online modes.
Significance
TaxiForSure is regarded as one of the pioneering Indian start-ups in the radio taxi and cab aggregation space. Its growth, fundraising and eventual sale to Ola illustrated the rapid evolution of India's urban mobility sector during the early 2010s and the trend of consolidation among domestic platforms in response to global competition. The founders subsequently went on to launch other ventures in the Indian start-up ecosystem; Aprameya Radhakrishna later co-founded the regional-language social network Koo.
