Background

TISS was founded in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work, established with funding from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. It was renamed the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in 1944. The institute pioneered formal training in social work in India, drawing on both Indian social realities and international frameworks of professional practice.

In 1964, TISS was declared a Deemed University by the Government of India under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, enabling it to award its own degrees. Over subsequent decades it expanded from its initial focus on social work into a multidisciplinary institution covering education, public health, law, media, disaster studies, gender, labour, and rural development.
