Background
The construction equipment business of the Tata group has its roots in a division of Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (Telco), which began producing earthmoving machinery in collaboration with Hitachi from the early 1980s. Following the corporate restructuring of the Tata group, the construction equipment business was carved out and brought under a dedicated company linked with Tata Motors.
The current joint-venture structure was formed when Hitachi Construction Machinery acquired a controlling stake in the construction equipment arm previously operated by Tata Motors, with Tata retaining a minority shareholding. The company was rebranded as Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery to reflect the partnership.
Operations
The company operates manufacturing plants in India that supply both the domestic market and export destinations. Its principal facilities include plants at Dharwad in Karnataka, Kharagpur in West Bengal, and Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, where the original Telco construction equipment line was based. The product portfolio spans compact machines for general construction to large mining-class excavators developed in collaboration with Hitachi.
Significance
Tata Hitachi is among the leading manufacturers of hydraulic excavators in India and plays a notable role in the Indian construction and mining equipment industry. Through the joint venture, Hitachi's product technology is combined with Tata's domestic manufacturing base, dealer network and customer service infrastructure, supporting infrastructure development, road construction, quarrying and coal and metal mining in India.
