Overview
Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) is a state veterinary university established in 1989, with its headquarters at Madhavaram Milk Colony, Chennai. The university is dedicated to higher education, research and extension in veterinary medicine, animal sciences, fisheries and allied disciplines.
The university brings together several constituent institutions across Tamil Nadu. These include the Madras Veterinary College at Vepery in Chennai, the Veterinary College and Research Institute at Namakkal, the Veterinary College and Research Institute at Tirunelveli, and the Veterinary College and Research Institute at Orathanadu in Thanjavur district. The Institute of Food and Dairy Technology at Koduvalli, Chennai, also functions as a constituent unit, offering programmes in food and dairy technology.
Research activities under TANUVAS span a range of areas relevant to animal health, livestock production and food safety. The university operates research farms and facilities that support work on leprosy bacteria, prawn and edible fish culture, and animal feed safety, reflecting its broader mandate in veterinary, fisheries and food sciences.
By bringing teaching, research and extension under a single university framework, TANUVAS supports the training of veterinarians, animal scientists, fisheries professionals and food and dairy technologists, while contributing to the livestock and allied sectors in Tamil Nadu.
