At the national level, its operations are governed by the Electricity Act, 2003 and related rules issued by the Central Electricity Authority and the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission for matters pertaining to grid standards and inter-state transmission.
Significance
As the dedicated transmission utility of Tamil Nadu, TANTRANSCO plays a central role in ensuring grid reliability in one of India's largest electricity-consuming states. Tamil Nadu has a substantial installed capacity in conventional thermal, nuclear, hydro and renewable energy — particularly wind power in the southern districts and growing solar capacity — and the transmission network operated by TANTRANSCO is critical for evacuating this generation and integrating it with the southern regional grid.
