The Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute (TRRI) is an agricultural research institute in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, dedicated to research, education, and extension activities related to rice cultivation. It functions as one of the constituent research stations of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore, and is located at Aduthurai in the Cauvery delta region of Thanjavur district, an area historically known as the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu.

Background
Rice is the principal food crop of Tamil Nadu, and the Cauvery delta has been the focus of organised agricultural research since the colonial era. The institute at Aduthurai was developed as a specialised centre to address the agro-ecological conditions of the delta, including issues of varietal improvement, water management, soil fertility, and pest and disease control under irrigated rice systems.
Following the establishment of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in 1971, several state agricultural research stations were brought under its administrative umbrella. The Aduthurai station was reorganised as the Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute to serve as the lead centre for rice research within the state university system.
Research activities
TRRI conducts research across the rice production cycle, with emphasis on:
- Breeding of improved rice varieties suited to short, medium, and long-duration seasons of the delta.
- Development of varieties tolerant to biotic stresses such as blast, bacterial leaf blight, brown planthopper, and stem borer.

Education and extension
As a unit of TNAU, the institute supports postgraduate research by hosting students working on rice-related topics in plant breeding, genetics, agronomy, entomology, and pathology. It also functions as a knowledge hub for farmers, extension officers, and the state Department of Agriculture, organising field days, training programmes, and on-farm demonstrations.
Significance
TRRI plays a central role in sustaining rice productivity in Tamil Nadu, particularly in the Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai. Its varietal releases and agronomic recommendations have been instrumental in adapting rice cultivation to changing climatic conditions, water availability, and pest pressures.
