Overview

Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University (TNDALU) is a public state university located in Chennai, India. It was established in 1997 by the Government of Tamil Nadu under The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University Act, 1996. The Act also brought all law colleges in Tamil Nadu under the control of the university, creating a unified framework for legal education within the state.

The university is named after B. R. Ambedkar, an Indian jurist, social reformer and the principal architect of the Constitution of India. It was inaugurated on 20 September 1997 by K. R. Narayanan, who later served as President of India.

In 2002, the university established a law school on its own campus, known as the School of Excellence in Law, Chennai (SOEL). Through SOEL and the affiliated colleges across Tamil Nadu, TNDALU offers programmes in legal studies and serves as the principal institution coordinating legal education in the state.
