The Taj Connemara is a heritage five-star hotel located in Chennai, the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Background

The hotel takes its name from Robert Bourke, 1st Baron Connemara, who served as Governor of Madras between 1886 and 1890. The property occupies a site in the central Mount Road area of Chennai, historically one of the city's most prominent commercial and civic precincts. Over its long history, the building has undergone successive phases of expansion and renovation that combine Art Deco interiors with elements drawn from earlier colonial-era construction on the site.

History

The Connemara has long been associated with the social and political life of Madras, hosting visiting dignitaries, members of the Indian and British political establishments, and members of the local elite during the colonial and post-Independence periods. The hotel later became part of the Taj Group, the hospitality arm of the Tata-owned Indian Hotels Company Limited, and was repositioned as a heritage property within the group's portfolio.

It has undergone multiple restoration programmes aimed at preserving its period interiors while modernising guest facilities. The property has been classified by the Taj Group among its heritage hotels alongside others such as the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai and the Rambagh Palace in Jaipur.

Facilities

The hotel offers guest rooms and suites, multi-cuisine restaurants, a coffee shop, banqueting and conference facilities, a swimming pool and a spa. Its restaurants have historically featured South Indian cuisine alongside international fare, and the property is frequently used as a venue for weddings, corporate events and civic functions in Chennai.

Significance

The Taj Connemara is regarded as a landmark in the architectural and social history of Chennai. As a surviving example of early twentieth-century hotel architecture in the city, it is often cited in discussions of Chennai's built heritage along Mount Road (Anna Salai). Its continued operation under the Taj brand has linked it to the broader development of organised luxury hospitality in India.
