Background

T-Series was established by Gulshan Kumar, who began his career selling fruit juice in Delhi before entering the audio cassette business. In the early 1980s, the Indian music market was dominated by a few established record labels, and pre-recorded cassettes were comparatively expensive. T-Series entered the market with low-priced cassettes of devotional music, film songs, and cover versions, which helped expand the recorded music audience in smaller towns and rural areas.

The company gradually built an extensive catalogue of Hindi film soundtracks, bhajans, ghazals, and regional-language music. Its devotional releases, including titles featuring singers such as Anuradha Paudwal and Sonu Nigam in their early careers, were particularly influential in popularising the label.

History

1983–1997: Founding and growth

After its founding in 1983, T-Series became a major force in the Indian cassette industry through aggressive pricing and a wide distribution network. The label was associated with the soundtrack of the 1990 film Aashiqui, which became one of the best-selling Hindi film soundtracks of its era and established T-Series as a leading music publisher for Hindi cinema. Through the 1990s, the company continued to release widely successful film and devotional albums.

1997: Death of Gulshan Kumar

Gulshan Kumar was shot dead in Mumbai in August 1997. Following his death, his son Bhushan Kumar took over the company at a young age, with his uncle Krishan Kumar in a senior role. Under Bhushan Kumar's leadership, T-Series diversified further into film production and acquired music rights for a large share of Hindi film releases.

2000s: Transition to digital

As physical music sales declined globally, T-Series transitioned to digital distribution, ringtones, and online streaming. The company licensed its catalogue to digital music platforms and built a strong presence on YouTube, where its main channel hosts a large library of Hindi film songs, devotional content, and music videos. The T-Series YouTube channel became one of the most-subscribed channels on the platform, drawing widespread international attention to the company.

Film production

T-Series Films, the production arm, has produced and co-produced numerous Hindi films across genres. Its filmography includes commercially successful titles in romance, action, biographical drama, and horror, often released in collaboration with other major Indian production houses.
