Overview
TKM College of Engineering was established under the auspices of the TKM College Trust, which also runs several other educational institutions in Kollam under the TKM banner. The college is named after Thangal Kunju Musaliar, an industrialist and philanthropist from Kollam who was associated with the founding of the trust. The institution is part of the government-aided private sector of higher education in Kerala, where the management runs the institution while the state government supports a portion of the staff salaries and admissions are partly conducted through state-level processes.
The campus is situated in Karicode, on the outskirts of Kollam city, and is connected to the rest of Kerala by the Main Central Road and the railway network passing through Kollam Junction. Over the decades, TKMCE has built a reputation as one of the institutions of choice for engineering aspirants from Kerala, and several alumni have gone on to careers in industry, research, public service, and academia, both in India and abroad.
Academics
The college offers Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes across a range of core and applied engineering disciplines. Typical departments include:
- Civil Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical and Electronics Engineering
- Electronics and Communication Engineering
- Computer Science and Engineering
- Architecture
Postgraduate programmes are offered in selected specialisations, including Master of Technology (M.Tech) streams aligned with the major engineering departments, as well as Master of Computer Applications (MCA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) programmes through the affiliated departments. The college also supports doctoral research in collaboration with the affiliating university.
Curriculum, examinations, and degree certification follow the regulations of the affiliating university. Earlier, the college was affiliated to the University of Kerala and later to Cochin University of Science and Technology for certain programmes, before the establishment of the state technological university brought most engineering colleges under a unified academic framework.
Campus and facilities
The TKMCE campus houses academic blocks for the various departments, laboratories, drawing halls, workshops, a central library, seminar halls, and auditoriums. Specialised laboratories support disciplines such as structural engineering, hydraulics, thermal sciences, electrical machines, communication systems, computing, and architectural studios.
Residential facilities include separate hostels for men and women on or near the campus. The campus also provides sports grounds, indoor games facilities, a health centre, banking and ATM access, and canteens. A dedicated placement and training cell coordinates campus recruitment, internships, and skill development activities for students.
Admissions
Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes are conducted primarily through the Kerala Engineering Architecture Medical (KEAM) entrance examination administered by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Government of Kerala. Seats are typically distributed between government merit, management, and community quotas as per the norms applicable to aided institutions in the state. Postgraduate admissions are based on national or state-level entrance examinations such as GATE for M.Tech programmes, with counselling conducted by the relevant state agency.
Student life
Student activities at TKMCE are organised through departmental associations, technical chapters of professional bodies, and cultural and arts forums. Students participate in chapters of organisations such as the Institution of Engineers (India), IEEE, the Indian Society for Technical Education, and similar discipline-specific bodies. The college hosts an annual technical festival and a cultural festival, where students from across Kerala participate in events ranging from coding contests and robotics to perform
