Background
The university takes its name from Swami Rama (1925–1996), a yogi and teacher who founded the Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust in the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas. The trust established a charitable hospital and a medical college at Jolly Grant, with the wider goal of bringing tertiary healthcare, education, and rural development services to the hill districts of Uttarakhand.
Swami Rama Himalayan University was constituted as a private university by the Government of Uttarakhand, bringing the trust's existing academic institutions under a single university framework.
Constituent institutions
- Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) – the medical college, which incorporates the teaching hospital and offers undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
- Himalayan College of Nursing – offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in nursing.
- Himalayan School of Biosciences – with programmes in biotechnology, microbiology, and related life sciences.
- Himalayan School of Engineering and Technology – offering engineering and computer applications programmes.

Campus and hospital
The university campus is situated near Jolly Grant, in close proximity to the Dehradun Airport. The associated Himalayan Hospital functions as a tertiary-care teaching hospital and serves as the principal clinical training centre for medical, nursing, and allied health students. The hospital provides services across a range of specialities and also runs outreach programmes in nearby rural and hill regions.
Activities and outreach
In addition to academic and clinical work, SRHU and the Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust are involved in rural development initiatives, including community health, sanitation, women's empowerment, and watershed and natural-resource projects in villages around Dehradun and the Garhwal region. These activities draw on Swami Rama's stated objective of integrating spiritual, educational, and developmental work.
Significance
As one of the private universities in Uttarakhand with a major teaching hospital, SRHU contributes to the supply of trained medical and nursing professionals in the Himalayan region. Its location at Jolly Grant has made the campus a notable referral and training centre for patients and students from across Uttarakhand and parts of western Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Nepal.
