Background

Suzlon was founded by Tulsi Tanti, who had originally run a textile business in Gujarat. Faced with unreliable and expensive grid power, Tanti installed wind turbines for captive use, an experience that led him to set up a dedicated wind energy company. Suzlon began by importing turbine technology and gradually built indigenous design, manufacturing and project execution capabilities, positioning itself as an integrated wind energy company offering end-to-end solutions from site identification to long-term operations and maintenance.

History and timeline

  • 1995: Suzlon is founded by Tulsi Tanti to manufacture and supply wind turbines in India.
  • Early 2000s: The company expands manufacturing in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, and develops large wind farms for Indian industrial customers.
  • 2005: Suzlon completes an initial public offering on Indian stock exchanges, becoming a widely-held listed entity.
  • 2006: Acquires Belgian gearbox maker Hansen Transmissions, strengthening its drivetrain technology base.
  • 2007–2009: Acquires a controlling stake in the German wind turbine manufacturer REpower Systems (later renamed Senvion), giving Suzlon access to large offshore-class turbine technology and a strong European footprint.
  • Early 2010s: Faces severe financial stress due to high acquisition-related debt, foreign currency convertible bond obligations, and a downturn in global wind markets.
  • 2015: Divests Senvion to private equity firm Centerbridge Partners as part of debt reduction.
  • 2020: Implements a major debt restructuring with a consortium of Indian lenders.
  • 2022: Tulsi Tanti, the founder and chairman, dies; family members and professional management continue to lead the company.
  • 2022–2023: Suzlon raises fresh equity through a rights issue and reduces its debt burden, returning to a more stable operating footing.

Operations and products

Suzlon manufactures wind turbine generators across multiple capacity classes, along with key components such as rotor blades, nacelle covers, tubular towers and control systems. Its manufacturing facilities are located in several Indian states, including Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Daman. The company also provides:

  • Wind resource assessment and site selection.
  • Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for wind farms.
  • Long-term operations and maintenance (O&M) services for installed fleets in India and abroad.

Suzlon has installed wind capacity for utility, independent power producer and corporate customers, and its turbines have been deployed in countries across Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa and Australia.

Significance

Suzlon is widely regarded as a pioneer of India's modern wind energy industry. By developing domestic manufacturing for wind turbines and large utility-scale wind farms, it helped establish wind power as a mainstream component of India's electricity mix and supported the country's renewable energy targets. Its rise also marked one of the earliest cases of an Indian engineering company building a globally competitive position in clean technology through cross-border acquisitions, while its later financial difficulties became a frequently cited example in studies of leveraged international expansion by Indian firms.
