Rise as a leading actor

Films such as Thalastaanam (1992), Manichitrathazhu (1993), Ekalavyan (1993), Commissioner (1994), Lelam (1997) and The King (1995) consolidated his image as an action hero known for sharp dialogue delivery. His pairing with directors such as Shaji Kailas and writers such as Renji Panicker produced several commercially successful political and crime thrillers during the decade.
Critically acclaimed work
Suresh Gopi won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Kaliyattam (1997), directed by Jayaraaj, an adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello set against the Theyyam ritual tradition of north Kerala. He has also received Kerala State Film Awards, including for his performance in Pavithram (1994).
Later career

Significance
Suresh Gopi is regarded as a defining figure of 1990s Malayalam cinema, a period often associated with high-octane political and investigative thrillers. His electoral victory from Thrissur in 2024 is a notable political development, as Kerala had until then remained outside the BJP's Lok Sabha tally, and his entry into the Union Council of Ministers gave the party a prominent Malayali face in the central government.
