Overview
Surendranagar Dudhrej is a twin-city municipal area in the Surendranagar district of the Indian state of Gujarat. The urban agglomeration combines the historic town of Surendranagar with the adjoining settlement of Dudhrej, and along with the nearby town of Wadhwan it forms one of the principal urban centres of the Saurashtra region. It serves as the administrative headquarters of Surendranagar district.

Geography
Surendranagar Dudhrej lies in the eastern part of the Saurashtra peninsula, on relatively flat terrain that transitions toward the Little Rann of Kutch to the north. The Bhogavo river passes through the area, separating Surendranagar Dudhrej from the older town of Wadhwan. The climate is semi-arid, with hot summers, a monsoon season from June to September, and mild winters.
Background and history
The settlement of Wadhwan, immediately adjoining the city, is among the older towns of Saurashtra and was historically the seat of the princely state of Wadhwan. Surendranagar developed in the modern period as a planned civil and administrative settlement and grew rapidly after independence as district functions were consolidated. Dudhrej, originally a separate village on the outskirts, was progressively absorbed into the urban fabric and is today administered jointly with Surendranagar.
Civic administration
The town is governed by the Surendranagar–Dudhrej–Wadhwan municipal arrangement, which oversees civic services such as water supply, sanitation, roads, and street lighting. As district headquarters, it hosts the offices of the District Collector, district court, district panchayat, and other state government departments serving Surendranagar district.
Economy
The economy is based on trade, services, and agro-processing linked to the surrounding agricultural hinterland, which produces cotton, groundnut, cumin, and other crops. The wider Surendranagar area is known for cotton ginning and pressing, salt production from inland salt works, and trade in agricultural commodities. The city functions as a market and service centre for the rural taluka.
Transport
Surendranagar Dudhrej is well connected by rail and road. Surendranagar Junction, on the Western Railway, lies on the Ahmedabad–Rajkot route and links the city to major centres in Gujarat and beyond. National Highway 47 (formerly NH 8A/8B sections) and state highways pass through or near the city, providing road links to Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and other parts of Saurashtra.
Education
The city has a number of schools affiliated to the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board as well as colleges affiliated to Saurashtra University and other state institutions, offering programmes in arts, commerce, science, education, and engineering.
Demographics
The population is predominantly Gujarati-speaking, with Hindus forming the majority and significant Muslim and Jain communities. Hindi and English are also used in education, administration, and commerce.
