The university traces its origins to the Telugu University established in Hyderabad in 1985, which was created to serve as an apex institution for higher learning and research in Telugu studies. Following the bifurcation of the erstwhile state of Andhra Pradesh and the formation of Telangana in 2014, the Government of Telangana reorganised the institution within its jurisdiction.
