Background

At the age of thirteen, she came to wider notice after winning the first season of the television singing competition Meri Awaz Suno in 1996, a contest aired on Doordarshan that served as a launchpad for several young singers of her generation.
Career
Early years (1996–1999)
Following her television win, Chauhan recorded her first film song for the soundtrack of Shastra (1996), composed by Kalyanji–Anandji. Her early career involved scattered film assignments while she trained further in classical music. The turning point came with Ismail Darbar's composition "Ruki Ruki Si Zindagi" for Ram Gopal Varma's Mast (1999), which earned her wide critical attention.
Rise in Hindi cinema (2000s)
Through the 2000s, Chauhan became a leading playback voice for upbeat dance numbers as well as ballads. Notable songs from this period include "Mehboob Mere" from Fiza (2000), "Dhoom Machale" from Dhoom (2004), "Beedi" from Omkara (2006), "Aaja Nachle" from Aaja Nachle (2007), and "Sajnaaji Vaari" from Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. (2007). She worked frequently with composers including A. R. Rahman, Vishal Bhardwaj, Vishal–Shekhar, Pritam, Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, and Salim–Sulaiman.
2010s onwards
Her work in the 2010s included songs such as "Sheila Ki Jawani" from Tees Maar Khan (2010), "Heroine" from Heroine (2012), "Kamli" from Dhoom 3 (2013), and "Nashe Si Chadh Gayi" reprise versions, alongside continued contributions to regional film industries. She has also recorded title tracks, jingles, and independent singles, and toured internationally with concert productions.
Television and judging
Chauhan has appeared as a judge on several music-based reality shows, including Indian Idol, The Voice India, and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs. Her television presence has helped popularise singing competitions among new audiences.
Style and significance
Chauhan is noted for a powerful, full-bodied voice with a wide tessitura, comfortably handling item numbers, qawwalis, sufi-influenced ballads, and rock-pop arrangements. Music critics have often credited her with helping reshape the female playback aesthetic in Bollywood after the long dominance of softer voices, bringing in a more contemporary, edgier timbre suited to the post-1990s sound design of Hindi film music.
Personal life
Sunidhi Chauhan married music director Hitesh Sonik in 2012. The couple has a son. She is based in Mumbai.
