Background

Somasunder came up through the Karnataka cricketing system, one of India's strongest domestic units, and played his first-class cricket primarily for the Karnataka state side in the Ranji Trophy. Karnataka, during this period, fielded a number of players who went on to represent India.

Career

Somasunder was selected to represent India in One Day Internationals during the mid-1990s. His selection followed performances in domestic cricket, where he was known as a top-order batsman. His international career was brief and he subsequently continued to feature in domestic cricket for Karnataka.

Domestic cricket

As part of the Karnataka squad, Somasunder competed in the Ranji Trophy, the premier first-class competition in India organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), as well as in other domestic tournaments such as the Duleep Trophy and limited-overs domestic events.

Significance

Somasunder is among the cricketers from Karnataka who broke into the Indian national side during the 1990s, a period when the state contributed several players to the senior team. While his international tenure was short, his domestic record places him in the broader history of Karnataka cricket.
