Background
Binny was born in Bangalore (now Bengaluru) into a cricketing family. His father, Roger Binny, was an all-rounder who played a significant role in India's victory at the 1983 World Cup in England, and later served as a national selector and administrator. Stuart Binny grew up in Karnataka's domestic cricket environment and progressed through age-group cricket in the state.
Domestic career
Binny made his first-class debut for Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy and went on to become a regular all-round contributor for the state across formats. He was part of the Karnataka squads that won the Ranji Trophy in successive seasons in the early 2010s, alongside players such as Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Vinay Kumar and Karun Nair. His ability to bat in the middle order and provide useful medium-pace overs made him a balanced presence in the side.
Indian Premier League
Binny appeared in the Indian Premier League for several franchises. He began with Royal Challengers Bangalore, before moving to Rajasthan Royals, where he had his most consistent run as a finisher and seam-bowling option. He later turned out for Mumbai Indians. His IPL performances, particularly with Rajasthan Royals, contributed to his elevation to the national side.
International career
Tests
Binny made his Test debut for India during the 2014 tour of England, becoming part of a long line of cricketers from Karnataka to play for the country. He played a small number of Tests, primarily as a lower-order batting all-rounder.
One Day Internationals
Binny's most notable international performance came in an ODI against Bangladesh in Mirpur in June 2014, when he returned bowling figures of 6 wickets for 4 runs. The spell stood as the best bowling figures by an Indian in ODI cricket and was among the best in the format's history. He was part of India's squad for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand, although he featured in only a limited role.
Twenty20 Internationals
He also represented India in T20Is during this period, contributing as a lower-order batsman and change bowler.
