Background

The Jesuits have a long-standing presence in higher education in Kolkata, beginning with the founding of St. Xavier's College on Park Street in the nineteenth century. As demand for graduate and professional programmes grew, the Calcutta Province of the Society of Jesus moved to establish a separate university campus in the developing township of New Town, on the north-eastern fringe of the Kolkata metropolitan area. The university was constituted under a West Bengal state legislative act as a private university, allowing it to design its own curricula, conduct examinations and award its own degrees.

Campus and academics

The campus is situated in Action Area III of New Town, an area that has emerged as one of the principal educational and information-technology corridors of the Kolkata region. Academic activity is organised through faculties and schools covering disciplines such as humanities and social sciences, commerce, business management, education, science, and law.

The institution follows a semester-based credit system, and admission to most programmes is conducted through entrance examinations and interviews administered by the university. Like other Jesuit institutions, it places emphasis on values-based education, community outreach, and social engagement alongside formal academic training.

Significance

St. Xavier's University, Kolkata is one of a small number of Jesuit universities in India and represents the expansion of the Xaverian educational tradition from undergraduate college work into a full university structure. It contributes to the broader cluster of higher-education institutions in New Town and supports West Bengal's policy of encouraging private participation in tertiary education while retaining state regulatory oversight.
