Location and setting
The university is based in Tirupati, a city in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh that also serves as the administrative headquarters of Tirupati district. Tirupati is situated approximately 150 km from Chennai, 250 km from Bangalore, and 416 km from Vijayawada, and is the second largest city in the Rayalaseema region after Kurnool. According to the 2011 Census of India, the city had a population of 287,035, with its urban agglomeration recording 459,985.
Tirupati is widely known as a pilgrimage centre on account of the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, one of the eight Svayam Vyakta Kshetras dedicated to Vishnu. In 2012–2013, the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, recognised Tirupati as the "Best Heritage City", and the city was subsequently selected as one of the hundred cities to be developed under the Smart Cities Mission.
Civic and institutional context
Tirupati functions as a municipal corporation and as the headquarters for several important administrative bodies, including the Tirupati district administration, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, the Tirupati Urban and Tirupati Rural mandals, the Tirupati revenue division, the Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL), and the Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA). The city's role as a regional administrative and educational hub provides the institutional setting in which the university operates.
