Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati

Overview

Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) is a medical state university and specialty hospital located in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India. The institute was conceived along the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and was established by an act of the Andhra Pradesh State Legislature.

The foundation stone of the institute was laid on 18 April 1986 by N. T. Rama Rao, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The hospital commenced functioning on 2 February 1993 and was subsequently accorded the status of a medical state university in 1995.

SVIMS functions both as a tertiary care specialty hospital and as a university offering medical education and training. Dr. R. V. Kumar serves as the Director-cum-Vice Chancellor of the institute.
