Background

SSN College of Engineering is part of the SSN Institutions, a group of educational establishments supported by the SSN Trust. The trust was set up by Shiv Nadar, founder of the HCL group of companies, in memory of his father, Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar. The college was conceived with the aim of providing high-quality technical education in southern India, with a focus on research, industry interaction, and holistic student development.

Over time, SSN has grown from a primarily teaching-focused engineering college into a research-oriented institution offering programmes across several disciplines of engineering and applied sciences. Its sister institution, SSN School of Advanced Career Education and Research, and the more recently established Shiv Nadar University Chennai, share the same campus precinct in Kalavakkam.

Academics

The college offers Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programmes across a range of disciplines. Postgraduate degrees are offered as Master of Engineering (M.E.), Master of Technology (M.Tech.), and Master of Business Administration (MBA), along with research programmes leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).

Programmes typically offered include:

  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Information Technology
  • Electronics and Communication Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Biomedical Engineering

The institution also has departments of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English, and Management Studies that support the engineering curriculum and offer research opportunities. As an autonomous college under Anna University, SSN designs its own syllabus and conducts its own examinations within the broad regulatory framework of the affiliating university.

Research

SSN places considerable emphasis on faculty and student research. Departments operate research groups in areas such as wireless communication, signal processing, machine learning, materials science, nanotechnology, energy systems, and computational fluid dynamics. The college supports sponsored research through funding agencies and industrial partners, and houses laboratories that cater to both teaching and advanced research work.

Campus and facilities

The campus is situated in Kalavakkam along the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) corridor, a region associated with information technology and educational establishments in the Chennai metropolitan area. The site is a residential campus with separate hostels for men and women, faculty quarters, and academic blocks.

Facilities on campus include:

  • Departmental laboratories and research centres
  • A central library with print and digital resources
  • Auditoriums and seminar halls
  • Sports grounds, indoor games facilities, and a gymnasium
  • Health centre, banking, and dining facilities
  • Wi-Fi enabled academic and hostel zones
