Background

Before April 2022, the area now forming Sri Sathya Sai district was part of the larger Anantapur district, one of the four districts of the historic Rayalaseema region. The Government of Andhra Pradesh, led by Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, undertook a state-wide reorganisation of districts with the stated objective of bringing administration closer to the people, generally aligning new districts with parliamentary constituencies.

Formation

The district was carved out of the western and southern portions of the undivided Anantapur district. Puttaparthi was designated as the district headquarters. The Hindupur parliamentary constituency broadly forms the geographical basis of the district. The choice of name reflects the global recognition of Puttaparthi as the seat of the Sathya Sai movement and its associated educational, medical and charitable institutions.

Geography

Sri Sathya Sai district lies in the southern Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh. It shares borders with Karnataka to the west, the new Anantapur district to the north, and other Rayalaseema districts to the east and south. The terrain is largely a semi-arid plateau, part of the rain-shadow zone east of the Western Ghats, drained by tributaries of the Penna and Chitravathi rivers.

Administration

The district is administered by a District Collector and Magistrate appointed by the state government, supported by a Superintendent of Police for law and order. For revenue administration the district is divided into revenue divisions, mandals and villages. Major urban centres include Puttaparthi, Hindupur, Dharmavaram, Madakasira, Penukonda and Kadiri.

Economy

The district's economy is predominantly agrarian, with groundnut being a leading crop, alongside paddy, pulses and horticultural produce. Dharmavaram is renowned for its handloom silk sarees, while Hindupur is an industrial and textile hub. Puttaparthi attracts pilgrims and visitors from across India and abroad due to the institutions associated with Sathya Sai Baba, including educational and super-speciality healthcare facilities run by the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust.

Notable places

  • Puttaparthi – site of Prasanthi Nilayam ashram and the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning.
  • Lepakshi – known for the 16th-century Veerabhadra temple built during the Vijayanagara period, famous for its mural paintings and the monolithic Nandi.
  • Penukonda – a former capital of the Vijayanagara rulers after the fall of Hampi, with historic forts and temples.
  • Dharmavaram – major centre for handloom silk weaving.
  • Hindupur – principal commercial town close to the Karnataka border.

Significance

The creation of Sri Sathya Sai district marks the formal recognition of Puttaparthi's prominence as a pilgrimage and educational centre, while also enabling more focused administration in the southern parts of the erstwhile Anantapur district. It is one of the few Indian districts named directly after a 20th-century spiritual figure.
