The university is named in honour of Sri Karan Narendra, and its jurisdiction covers a group of districts in eastern Rajasthan for the purposes of agricultural research and extension.

- Agronomy and soil science
- Plant breeding and genetics
- Horticulture
- Plant pathology and entomology
- Agricultural economics and extension education
- Agricultural engineering
- Home science / community science
Research and extension
As a state agricultural university, SKNAU operates research stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) within its assigned zone. These centres carry out region-specific research on crop varieties, soil and water management, livestock and farm mechanisation, and disseminate recommendations to farmers through extension activities, training programmes and demonstrations.
Significance
SKNAU plays an important role in addressing the agricultural needs of semi-arid eastern Rajasthan, where issues such as water scarcity, soil salinity and variable rainfall significantly affect farm productivity. By focusing on locally relevant research and human resource development, the university contributes to the wider network of agricultural education institutions in India coordinated under the framework of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
