Background

The Commonwealth Games is a quadrennial multi-sport event organised by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) for athletes from member nations of the Commonwealth of Nations. India has been a regular participant since 1934 and has historically performed strongly in disciplines such as shooting, wrestling, weightlifting, badminton, table tennis, boxing and athletics.

The 2026 edition was reassigned to Glasgow after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew from hosting in 2023, citing rising costs. Glasgow, which had previously hosted the 2014 Commonwealth Games, accepted a scaled-down format with a reduced sports programme concentrated across a smaller cluster of venues.

Focus Areas of the Review

  • Status of athlete training, including national camps conducted under the National Sports Federations.
  • Support extended through the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and the Khelo India ecosystem.
  • Coordination between the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the concerned federations.
  • Logistical arrangements, including team selection, travel, accreditation and medical support.
  • Sports-wise medal prospects in disciplines retained in the 2026 programme.

Indian Sports Administration Context

Mansukh Mandaviya assumed charge as Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports following the formation of the Narendra Modi-led government in June 2024. The ministry oversees the Sports Authority of India, the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), and centrally sponsored schemes including Khelo India and the Fit India Movement. The Indian Olympic Association is the recognised National Olympic Committee responsible for fielding the contingent at the Commonwealth Games.

Significance

The review reflects the Government of India's emphasis on systematic preparation for major international events and follows similar high-level monitoring exercises undertaken before previous editions of the Olympic, Asian and Commonwealth Games. The 2026 Games carry added importance as several traditionally strong Indian disciplines, including shooting and wrestling, were not part of the initial pared-down Glasgow programme, prompting greater attention to medal planning in the retained sports.
