Seasons and production timeline
Season 1 (2020)
The eight-episode debut season, written by Neeraj Pandey, Deepak Kingrani and Benazir Ali Fida, was released on 17 March 2020. The narrative spans nineteen years of intelligence work and incorporates references to real events such as the 2001 Parliament attack. The season was directed by Neeraj Pandey and Shivam Nair.
Special Ops 1.5: The Himmat Story (2021)
A four-episode prequel-style instalment titled Special Ops 1.5: The Himmat Story premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on 12 November 2021. It explores Himmat Singh's earlier years in the agency and the formative cases that shaped his career, with Kay Kay Menon reprising the lead role alongside Aftab Shivdasani, Aadil Khan, Maria Ryaboshapka and Parmeet Sethi.
Subsequent instalments
Following the reception of the first two instalments, the franchise was extended with further seasons developed under the same creative team, continuing Himmat Singh's investigative arc and expanding the ensemble of field agents.
Themes and style
The series draws on procedural details of intelligence work, including budget oversight, inter-agency coordination, and the ethics of covert action. It blends fictional plotting with allusions to real terror incidents in India and South Asia, a narrative technique that Neeraj Pandey had previously employed in films such as A Wednesday! (2008) and Baby (2015). Locations across India, the Middle East, and Europe are used to depict the geographical reach of R&AW operations.
Reception
Critics generally praised Kay Kay Menon's performance, the writing's restraint compared with louder action thrillers, and the layered structure that frames the action through a present-day inquiry. The series is regarded as one of the notable Indian espionage offerings on streaming platforms alongside titles such as The Family Man.
Significance
Within the Indian streaming landscape, Special Ops is considered an early flagship original for Hotstar Specials in the long-form thriller genre. It contributed to the popularisation of intelligence-agency narratives on OTT platforms in India and helped establish Neeraj Pandey's presence in episodic streaming, complementing his earlier work in feature films focused on national security.
