Law and order is handled separately by the Delhi Police under a Deputy Commissioner of Police for the South District.
For revenue administration, South Delhi district is organised into subdivisions, each headed by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). The subdivisions are further divided into tehsils with associated villages and urban revenue estates. The principal subdivisions historically associated with the district are Hauz Khas, Mehrauli, Saket and Defence Colony.
Geography
The district lies in the southern part of the NCT of Delhi. Parts of the district fall within the Delhi Ridge, an extension of the Aravalli Range, which gives the area its undulating topography and rocky outcrops. The terrain has shaped both the historical settlements of the region and its modern green areas, including the Sanjay Van and Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary in adjoining tracts.

Reorganisation of Delhi districts
Delhi was originally organised into nine revenue districts in January 1997. In 2012, the Government of NCT of Delhi reorganised the districts, increasing their number to eleven by carving out new districts from the existing ones. As part of this reorganisation, South East Delhi was created partly from areas earlier within South Delhi, altering the latter's jurisdiction.
Judiciary
The district is served by the Saket District Courts complex, which houses several district and sessions courts catering to South and South East Delhi. The complex is one of the major court complexes of the National Capital Territory.
Education and institutions
South Delhi hosts a number of important educational and research institutions, including the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi at Hauz Khas, the South Campus of the University of Delhi, and the Jawaharlal Nehru University in adjoining areas. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) lies on the district's northern edge.
Significance
South Delhi is among the most prominent districts of the capital, combining historic monuments from the Delhi Sultanate period with planned post-Independence residential colonies, diplomatic enclaves, and commercial centres. It contributes significantly to the cultural, educational, and economic profile of Delhi.
