Sooraj R. Barjatya (born 22 February 1964) is an Indian filmmaker who works in Hindi cinema. Known for directing and producing several commercially successful films, his work is most closely associated with themes of familial ties, traditional values, and Indian cultural ethos. He serves as the chairman of Rajshri Productions, the family-run studio founded by his grandfather Tarachand Barjatya in 1947.

Background

Barjatya belongs to the Barjatya family, which has been associated with Indian film production since the mid-20th century. His grandfather, Tarachand Barjatya, established Rajshri Productions in 1947, and the company has remained a family-run enterprise spanning production, distribution, and exhibition. Sooraj Barjatya began his career in the film industry as an assistant director to filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt before moving into direction under the Rajshri banner.

Directorial debut

Barjatya made his debut as a director with Maine Pyar Kiya in 1989. The romantic drama emerged as one of the top-grossing Hindi films of its time and established his characteristic style of family-oriented storytelling.

Commercial peak

His second film, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), became the highest-grossing Indian film up to that point. The film, structured around an extended family wedding, reinforced his association with wholesome, family-centric narratives.

Subsequent films

Barjatya followed up with the family dramas Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999), Vivah (2006), and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), each of which achieved commercial success. In 2022, he directed Uunchai, for which he won the National Film Award for Best Direction.
