Career

Early career and debut (2007–2009)

Kapoor made her acting debut opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya (2007), an adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's White Nights. The film received a mixed response, but her performance earned her a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Female Debut. She followed this with Delhi-6 (2009), directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, opposite Abhishek Bachchan.

Establishment in mainstream cinema (2010–2014)

After a series of films with limited commercial success, Kapoor appeared in Aisha (2010), an adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma, produced by her sister Rhea Kapoor. She gained wider commercial success with Raanjhanaa (2013), directed by Aanand L. Rai and co-starring Dhanush, and with Bewakoofiyaan (2014) and Khoobsurat (2014).

Critical recognition (2015–2018)

Kapoor played Pakistan International Airlines flight attendant Neerja Bhanot in the biographical thriller Neerja (2016), directed by Ram Madhvani. The film, based on the 1986 hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73, was a critical and commercial success. For her performance she received the National Film Award – Special Mention and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics).

She subsequently appeared in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) opposite Salman Khan, Padman (2018) with Akshay Kumar and Radhika Apte, and Veere Di Wedding (2018), an ensemble film produced by Rhea Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor that featured Kareena Kapoor Khan, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania.
