Overview
Sohrab Merwanji Modi (2 November 1897 – 28 January 1984) was an Indian stage and film actor, director and producer. He worked across theatre and cinema, becoming known for historical and literary subjects brought to the Indian screen.
Modi's filmography includes Khoon Ka Khoon (1935), an adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet, along with Sikandar, Pukar and Prithvi Vallabh. He also made Jhansi ki Rani, Mirza Ghalib, Jailor and Nausherwan-E-Adil, drawing on history, legend and classical literature for his narratives.
His films were noted for carrying a message of strong commitment to social and national issues, a thread that ran through his work as both director and producer.
