Overview

Soban Singh Jeena University (SSJ University) is a state university located at Almora in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It was established in 2020 under the Soban Singh Jeena University Act, 2019 (Uttarakhand Act No. 19 of 2020), the legislation having been approved by the cabinet of Uttarakhand in October 2019.

The university commenced operations in August 2020, when Prof. Narendra Singh Bhandari assumed office as its founder Vice-Chancellor. It was carved out of Kumaun University, with certain campuses in the Kumaon region being brought under the new institution.

SSJ University has four affiliated campuses: the Soban Singh Jeena Campus at Almora, the Laxman Singh Mahar Campus at Pithoragarh, the Pandit Badri Dutt Pandey Campus at Bageshwar, and a campus at Champawat. The Pithoragarh and Bageshwar campuses were established in 2020 at the time of the university's separation from Kumaun University, while the Champawat campus was established in 2022.
