Background
Coal in the Godavari Valley region was first identified in the 1870s, with early mining beginning at Yellandu (then in the Hyderabad State). The company traces its corporate origins to the Hyderabad (Deccan) Company, which was floated in the late 19th century to develop the Singareni coal seams. After Indian independence and the integration of Hyderabad State, the enterprise was reorganised as a state undertaking and later restructured as a joint venture between the central and state governments.
Operations
SCCL operates a mix of underground and opencast mines spread across the coal belt of the erstwhile districts of Adilabad, Mancherial, Peddapalli, Bhupalpally, Khammam and Bhadradri Kothagudem. The company's mining activities are organised into several geographical areas, each managed from a regional headquarters. In addition to coal production, SCCL has diversified into thermal power generation through its Singareni Thermal Power Plant at Jaipur in the Mancherial district, and has undertaken solar power projects on reclaimed mine land.
Markets
The company's principal customers are thermal power utilities in the southern Indian states, along with cement plants, steel producers and other industrial consumers. Coal is dispatched primarily by rail through dedicated sidings linked to the Indian Railways network.
