Career
Early work
Simran began her acting career with Hindi films in the mid-1990s, including Tere Mere Sapne (1996). With limited traction in Hindi cinema, she shifted focus to Tamil and Telugu films, debuting in Tamil with Sandhippoma and gaining wider attention through Telugu productions soon after.
Rise in Tamil and Telugu cinema
Her breakthrough came with Kannethirey Thondrinal (1998), a romantic comedy that established her as a popular leading actress in Tamil cinema. She followed this with Vaalee (1999) opposite Ajith Kumar, in which her performance in dual-shaded roles received acclaim. Through 1999–2003 she featured in a sustained run of commercially successful films including Priyamaanavale (2000), Parthale Paravasam (2001), Panchathanthiram (2002) and Tirumala Tirupati Venkatesa (1999) in Telugu.
Collaboration with major directors
She worked with Mani Ratnam in Kannathil Muthamittal (2002), portraying an adoptive mother, a performance that earned her wide critical recognition and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Tamil). She also collaborated repeatedly with directors K. S. Ravikumar and Vasanth, and with leading male stars including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Ajith Kumar, Vijay, Chiranjeevi and Venkatesh.
Television and later work
After her marriage in 2003 and a temporary withdrawal from leading roles, Simran returned to films in supporting and character roles. She has hosted Tamil television programmes, including dance and reality show formats, and has continued to feature in films across South Indian languages, taking up motherly and ensemble roles in the 2010s and 2020s. Her later credits include appearances in Hindi web series and films such as Petta (2019) and Telugu and Tamil productions opposite a younger generation of leads.
